More than 180 die in floods in four states, 71 in Gujarat

Many states including Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Manipur have been facing the adverse effects of the flash floods.

The death toll in Gujarat has risen to 53, including 28 deaths in worst-hit Banaskantha district, and 14 districts and a population of about 40 lakh were affected. More than ten lakhs food packets have been airdropped/ distributed to the flood victims. About two lakh people are staying in relief camps.

Flood waters submerged parts of Imphal West district as well as Uripok, Sagolband, Lamphel, some portion of Kwairamban bazar yesterday, sources said, adding that water level on all major rivers in Manipur is, however, receding as rains stopped since yesterday. Rajasthan has experienced excessive rainfall in most of its districts. The situation is grim particularly in districts of Jalore, Jhalawar, Baran, Sirohi, Barmer and Dungarpur. She assured that top government and police officials were deputed to supervise relief and rescue work. “Another 150 villagers are still stuck and the army is carrying out rescue operations”, said Burdwan district magistrate Soumitra Mohan. Banerjee appealed to the NGO s and other social organizations to extend support to rescue the people and provide them relief material.

Banerjee said that besides 47 municipalities, 210 blocks and 9,691 villages were affected by the flood due to heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Komen. A population of 36,90,627 are affected. As many as 3.63 lakh people have taken shelter in 2,213 relief camps in the 12 affected districts. A total of 5,672 cattle is also lost in the floods. 7 relief camps have been opened and 55 peoples have been accommodated. In some districts like Howrah and Hooghly, the situation worsened.

Five people lost their lives and 644 villages and 4,80,399 people were affected.

Troops of southern command and south western command have been involved in rescue operations in flood-affected areas of Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan.

Places like Mukundpur, Dum Dum Park and Alipore Bodyguard Lines remain inundated, as people used boats to ferry across.
