At Cochran’s bond hearing, prosecutors said a witness who drove directly behind the gunmen watched as the shooting happened about 8:45 p.m.in the 11500 block of South Church Street.
He was with his wife and grandson at the time of the shooting, standing next to the new auto he had just purchased for himself the day prior. He was rushed to Christ Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
“[The victim] and his wife and 11-year-old grandson hit the ground to try and avoid the gunfire”, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Plzekota said in court Friday.
A 25-year Chicago police veteran, Buckner handled equipment and supplies for the department, police said. His wife and grandson, 11, who were also outside, were not injured, but another man, 41, who was on a nearby porch also wounded. He taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition, police said. Buckner was fatally shot.
He was previously found delinquent-the juvenile court equivalent of guilty-in four cases which included possession of a stolen motor vehicle, criminal trespass to a vehicle, and aggravated battery to a police officer, Przekota said.
“He was part of the the family”, Roy said of Buckner.
Police have said the shooting stemmed from an earlier gang fight in a neighborhood park and that Buckner was not the intended target.
