Mosquito pool tests positive for West Nile virus, Boulder County Public Health

An unidentified patient in ZIP Code 75217 southeast Dallas/ Pleasant Grove was diagnosed with West Nile Fever, which is a milder form of the virus.

The Wabash County Health Department needs your help in the fight against the West Nile Virus.

“No matter where you live, now is the time to be proactive in protecting ourselves and our families from West Nile virus”, said Drager. Positive mosquito pools have been confirmed in five other Colorado counties this year: Denver, Jefferson, Larimer, Pueblo and Weld counties. People with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes and kidney disease are at greater risk experiencing symptoms which include headache, body aches, joint pains or rash. In a small number of cases, infection can result in encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death. Generally, symptoms appear 3 to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

No vaccine or treatment is now available for West Nile Virus. Health professionals are using this opportunity as a reminder to Utah residents to take the necessary steps to protect themselves against mosquitoes and their bites.

Mosquitoes are a common insect this time of year along the San Diego river, but last weekend’s storm brought extra standing water.

– DUSK and DAWN are when mosquitoes are most active.

The MSDH only reports laboratory-confirmed cases to the public. Nationally, twelve cases have been reported in Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming so far this season.
