Mosquito that transmits Zika found in Chile

Following consultation with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), the ministry of health in Trinidad and Tobago reported that, as of Friday, there have been 16 confirmed cases of zika virus infection in Trinidad.

The Zika outbreak was first detected in Brazil past year and is spreading through the Americas.

Zika-carrying mosquitoes are now present in about 30 states, up from 12. The mosquito transmits the Zika virus and is being studied at the institute.

Health Minister Carmen Castillo says the mosquito is in Arica.

The Zika virus causes symptoms that typically last up to seven days, such as mild fever, conjunctivitis and headache. “We also ask pregnant women who may have been exposed to Zika to talk to their doctors about getting tested”.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found one such case of a man infecting another man through sexual transmission in January, when Dallas County health officials confirmed that someone who had traveled to Venezuela contracted the virus and passed it onto his sexual partner. He said a single mosquito can lay 300 eggs and that each insect needs only enough water to fill a bottle cap to reproduce. In another study, ultrasound exams spotted some sort of abnormality, not just microcephaly, in almost 30 percent of women who had Zika during pregnancy.

Nobody has been infected with Zika from a mosquito bite occurring in the 50 states.

“Well, yes, it depends on the extent of local case in the United States”.

“We chose to use recycled tires – partly because tires already represent up to 29% of the breeding sites chosen by the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, partly because tires are a universally affordable instrument in low-resource settings, and partly because giving old tires a new use creates an opportunity to clean up the local environment”, Ulibarri said.

“People who are pregnant or are planning on being pregnant very soon, I would recommend [they] not travel”. Since the disease is mainly transmitted by mosquito bite, screens, repellants, and nets are highly encouraged for anyone traveling to equatorial countries. The Health Department is also increasing surveillance by adding 61 new mosquito traps that specifically attract Aedes species of mosquitos.

However, the chance that those mosquitoes will transmit the virus to people in Wisconsin this year seems slim, Paskewitz said.

CDC director Thomas Frieden said Wednesday that this report marks a turning point in the outbreak.

And while the mosquito can be found in the state, its transmission of Zika has only been seen in laboratory studies.

Does it matter when during pregnancy the mother is infected?
