Right now, there’s no word on which schools will be closed tomorrow.

“Detroit’s public schools are in a state of crisis”, the Detroit teachers’ union wrote on its website.

Disgruntled Detroit educators have stepped up efforts to protest Gov. Rick Snyder’s plans for the district, its ramshackle finances, their low pay, dilapidated buildings and overcrowded classrooms.

“These ongoing illegal actions chosen by teachers represent an extreme disservice to the more than 44,790 students and their families who today lost another day of instruction and were again inconvenienced or caused to lose wages due to these closures”, Earley said in a statement Wednesday. Everyone knows that Detroit Public Schools are broken beyond hope because the government can’t run inner city schools. The massive sickout was staged to coincide with President Obama’s visit to Detroit on Wednesday, Detroit Federation of Teachers spokeswoman Ann Mitchell told The Associated Press. These are communities that have borne the brunt of the downsizing of the auto industry and the consequences of racist real estate and lending practices which have destroyed their tax base.

Teachers are “frustrated” with Detroit’s public school system, Mitchell said, adding that due to budget constraints, teachers’ paychecks have been cut by up to 10 percent and the cost of their health care packages has risen.

It would create a second school district within the city that assumes control over all of its schools and students, while leaving the current Detroit Public Schools system with only the district’s debt, said Republican state Sen.

“The teachers teach despite being in those conditions”.

In a release sent Wednesday evening, activist Heather Miller from the group said that in a phone conference, Detroit Public Schools teachers agreed to another sick out. “They are doing homework”, Watson-Whittaker said Wednesday afternoon. “No more emergency managers, we are calling for a return to democracy”, Dagnogo said.

It also would allow hearings to be held for more than one teacher at a time, empower the state superintendent to revoke their teaching certificates and impose larger fines.

Duggan gave White House official Cecilia Munoz a tour of some city neighborhoods on Wednesday, after he met Tuesday with Detroit’s delegation in the Legislature to work out their strategy on trying to improve conditions. “Lansing needs to act”. They include getting rid of the emergency manager and restoring programs in the schools.

“Detroit schools are failing at the most basic fundamentals of education: teaching children”, Snyder said.

The emergency filing sought a restraining order and preliminary injunction to stop the teachers from staging further sick-outs.
