A woman who returned to her Portland, Ore., home with her two children early Sunday morning shot and killed an intruder who was in the home, police said.
The 59-year-old man’s name has not been released. She reportedly used her own handgun to shoot and kill him. If it was not for her exercising her right to defend herself and her family using a firearm, the situation may have played out far worse.
Neighbor Amber Murray told the station the home was vacant for a while before the woman and her children moved in recently.
Police arrived at the home in Portland at about 1:47 a.m., when they found a dead man inside.
The home intruder’s autopsy is scheduled for Monday, and is expected to be identified after his family is notified.

Officers did not arrest the homeowner, who they said was cooperating with investigators.
