Mother of ‘affluenza’ teenager is jailed in US
Ethan Couch, 18, and his mother, Tonya Couch, 48, were captured in the Mexican Pacific Coast city of Puerto Vallarta on Monday.

Further details have come to light about Couch’s time in Mexico, including an incident in which he ran up too big a tab at a strip club and was unable to pay, forcing his mother to foot the bill.
She was sent on a plane to the U.S., while her son Ethan, 18, remained in the custody of the National Migration Institute facility, an official from the agency said.
A guard stands watch from atop a building inside the Agujas immigration detention center, where USA fugitive Ethan Couch is being detained in Iztapalapa, Mexico City, Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015.
The appeal filed in Mexico on behalf of Ethan Couch argues that deportation would violate his rights.
Benitez has been called a “rock star” and is the same attorney who got a U.S. Marine out of a Mexican prison past year where he had been held for seven months. The sheriff said that the teen has never expressed remorse for his actions and that his case sparked more outrage than any other Anderson has encountered in his law enforcement career.
If the judge considering the appeal decides there was a mistake made in the process of detaining Couch, he could be released, and authorities would have to re-arrest him, Lopez said.
Tonya Couch had her nursing license revoked in 2012 for failing to disclose a reckless driving charge in 2003, according to the Texas Board of Nursing.
Lawyers and court officials in both Mexico and the United States are still processing the statuses of Ethan and Tonya Couch. He pleaded guilty to four counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury and was sentenced to 10 years’ probation. At the time, many were outraged that a judge sentenced him to probation instead of jail time, slamming his now-notorious “affluenza” defense. The condition is not recognized as a medical diagnosis by the American Psychiatric Association, and its invocation during the legal proceedings drew ridicule.
During a hearing in February 2014, Boyd told the families that her decision had nothing to do with a psychologist’s comment about “affluenza” during his testimony for the defense. But if he is treated as a juvenile, the sentence would be lighter, Wilson said.
The mother of fugitive teenager Ethan Couch, known for using an “affluenza” defence in a fatal drunken-driving accident, has been returned to the USA from Mexico. Couch was deported from Mexico and was flown to Los Angeles early Thursday morning.
The report says mother and son were, “confusing about their names and mentioned they had no identification and no immigration documents”.
Ethan Couch picked up the gun the next day, but did not explain why he had the weapon, according to the hotel workers. “Yes, but I think it is delaying the inevitable”, said Dallas attorney Peter Schulte, who specializes in juvenile law.
Couch would then face up to 120 days in an adult jail, followed by 10-year probation.
Ethan Couch, who was tracked to Mexico after violating his probation in the deaths of four people in 2013 while he was driving drunk, was being detained in Mexico City on Thursday, officials said.
He apparently vanished after the emergence of a video showing Couch at a party taking part in a drinking game, which violated the terms of his probation.
