Mother Teresa now a saint: Pope Francis canonizes nun for the poor

Living in Kolkata (once known as Calcutta), Saint Teresa, who died 19 years ago, ran clinics for India’s desperately poor and offered comfort and medical attention to those who couldn’t get it anywhere else.

The late nun dedicated her life to helping India’s poor communities, and has now been declared a SAINT for all her charitable work.

Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxhiu was a tiny Albanian woman born an Ottoman citizen in 1910, in Skopje.

Hundreds of Missionaries of Charity sisters had front-row seats at the Mass.

According to a September 4 communique from the Vatican, the guests are “are poor and needy people, above all from the dormitories of the Sisters of Mother Teresa and come from all over Italy”, including Milan, Bologna, Florence, Naples and from all the houses in Rome.

“The Mother’s message of love continues to inspire millions of people around the world”.

Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity (MoC) order have been criticised both during her life and since her death.

The process of being officially canonized into sainthood is a long one that starts with the review of the potential saint by church officials.

“Her talk really reached all of us to see the great things that this small woman has accomplished”, Elaine Lucious of Bloomsburg said. And the cashier said no.

While her sainthood wasn’t the sole focus of this mass, Mother Teresa was definitely a hot topic of discussion. He said the pair had “lucked out” and that witnessing Teresa’s canonization was “a once in a lifetime experience”.

“She had that attractive saying, ‘God doesn’t want us to be ideal, he only wants us to be faithful.’ And she was faithful even in times of trial”, Dolan said.

“Let us carry her smile in our hearts and give it to those whom we meet along our journey, especially those who suffer”, he added.

“Today was Mother’s Day at the Vatican”, I told a group of clergy, and
international human rights activists after the ceremony.

The ceremony came a day before the 19th anniversary of Teresa’s death in Kolkata, the Indian city where she spent almost four decades tending to the poorest of the poor.
