“In June of 1995, Mother Teresa was right on the steps of that church, looking out at everyone”, Most Rev. John O. Barres, Bishop of Allentown Diocese, said.

She died September 5, 1997, and was beatified just six years later by St. John Paul II on October 19, 2003. Four screens were placed to give a live coverage of this celebration to the public. “During the mass the official anthem sung at the Canonization of Mother Teresa in Rome was sung by a group of trained children”.

Pope Francis canonized Mother Teresa before thousands at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City Sunday morning.

Coming just a day after she was canonised by Pope Francis in the Vatican City, the death anniversary which is observed as a feast by nuns of the order, had a special significance today.

Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, which was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time, later Yugoslavia, and now Albania, in 1910. This comes as no surprise as the Pope, who prioritises the poor, was eager to make her a saint during the church’s present Holy Year.

We’re wiping tears of happiness away from our cheeks, knowing Mother Teresa’s kind heart has not been forgotten. Francis also used his sermon to recall Mother Teresa’s fervent opposition to abortion, which she termed “murder by the mother” in a controversial Nobel Peace Prize speech in 1979.

Pope Francis said in his homily during the canonization how a little nun who died in 1997 shamed world leaders for the crimes of poverty they themselves created.

“She had a great impact, this place was just shining like a star”, said Kaliea “She had a glow on her face, and she was a totally wrinkled woman, but still so lovely”. This could become the first such church in India dedicated or named after Saint Teresa, who worked for 45 years serving the poorest of the poor on the streets of Kolkata.
