MOTM: Manchester United 2-0 Southampton – Premier League 2016/17

Ibrahimovic scored twice during Friday night’s Premier League victory over Southampton and, speaking to ManUtd.com and the Manchester Evening News at Old Trafford, the 34-year-old striker discussed his appreciation for being an elder statesman and how that contrasts with his public image. “We need to put the puzzle together and then work on it”. I need to get to know everybody, the way we play. So far three goals in total and I’m happy for the team, two games, two wins.

― Reuters picMANCHESTER, Aug 20 ― Jose Mourinho says Manchester United’s rehabilitation will be a steady process but yesterday’s 2-0 win over Southampton indicated the team are quickly rediscovering their vim and verve under the new manager.

“I try to do what I’m best at, helping my team-mates, creating chances and scoring goals”.

“It was the first game for Paul [Pogba] and the rest will come”.

“He needs to get to know the players, I need to get to know everybody, the way we play, the simple things outside the pitch, inside the pitch. I couldn’t be happier with him”.

“It’s a great feeling, I’m very happy, it’s my brother’s birthday so I am happier”, he told BBC Sport.

“I played with many big stars”, United’s new and in-form number nine continued. We are becoming better and better. I was relaxed, didn’t have nerves and played my game.

Ibrahimovic stole the limelight back from Pogba just after the half-hour mark, netting with a bullet header from a curling Wayne Rooney delivery.

“We brought to the game some aspects of the United culture, the first goal is a great example of that”.

“I think he was so good”, Mourinho said. The kind of football we are trying to play.

The midfielder received a warm welcome on his comeback, but his nerves still got the best of him early on as he lost possession on his first touch of the ball to set Southampton on their way.

United temporarily top the league table with six points from two games.

Mourinho’s men maintained their 100% start to the campaign with the win over Claude Puel’s team and there is now the general consensus the Red Devils will be in contention for the title. “The coach gives me a lot of responsibility and I take it. We did the mistake only once, so Paul is back and I am really happy to have him back”.
