CCTV footage captured the freakish scene in Center Line, Michigan.

Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident, during which the man managed to set the gas pump and his vehicle alight trying to kill the arachnid he’d seen crawling on his gas tank. So he took a lighter and set it on fire, which then cause a fire at the gas station.

The man, who was not identified, escaped injury and his vehicle suffered little damage, but the gas pump was destroyed.

The man was pumping gas on Friday when he saw a spider near his gas tank. But, she said, the man was evasive as to what had happened. He originally tried to blame the fire on static electricity before eventually admitting the embarrassing truth to investigators, CBS reports.

He pulled out his lighter to burn the spider, because he was scared of it, he said.

He reportedly returned to the gas station on Wednesday to apologize. He claimed to be deathly afraid of spiders.

Thankfully, the fire was contained to just one pump and there was no loss of life.
