Motorola updates Android phones, offers better cameras

Tuesday was an eventful day for the mobile indutry in India, and it was especially interesting if you’re in the market for a new budget or midrange Android smartphone. The Moto X Play, on the otherhand, will cost $299 and will be available in 60 countries worldwide in August.

Fancy your chances of getting a OnePlus 2 invite? These things are missing in the OnePlus 2.

It’s expecting the OnePlus 2 to perform even better, and by the online reaction, it seems to have received a lot of interest.

Inside the Moto X Play is a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, with Adreno 405 graphics and 2GB RAM.

The rear camera is 21MP with f/2.0 aperture, colour correlated temperature flash and with dual LEDs, 1080p HD Video, Slow Motion video and the front camera is 5MP. The 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage can be expanded via MicroSD card. Paired with a single front-facing speaker it gave us a great first impression. It also comes with a three-position mute switch that allows for priority notifications.

The OnePlus 2 starts at $70 cheaper. What about their launch date and pricing? And, just like the other phones, Moto X Play will also be customizable through Moto Maker. With the iSight technology, Apple has perfected its iPhone camera. The question is: could this be the Moto 360, the one that wasn’t announced on July 28? The new Moto G and the new Moto X were the two phones which had their specs leaked.

Motorola is also unveiling the new devices at a time when users who had purchased the original Moto X in 2013 are nearing the end of their contracts.

At Motorola’s launch event for the new Moto X and Moto G this week, I posed the questions to Jim Wicks, the company’s senior vice president of consumer experience design.

According to another report in The Verge, the Moto X Play has a smaller screen at 5.5 inches with 1080 pixel resolution full HD display. The phone will be available in either 16GB or 32GB storage configurations, each with microSD expansion available.

The rest of the specifications include 802.11bgn WiFi, GPS/GNSS and 4G LTE (Cat 4) connectivity, a bigger 2470mAh battery and Android 5.1 OS. That means you’ll need to sign up and then wait for an invite before you can buy the phone, something Motorola doesn’t require with the Moto X. Some of them, such as the OnePlus 2 and Moto X Style directly compete with each other.

Sporting the same 21-megapixel rear camera with f2.

The device will run on Android Lollipop 5.1.1.

Thanks to the thin bezels, the company kept the size manageable for one-handed usage. The high-end handset has a stunning design and features an impressive 1.8Ghz hexa-core processor with 3GB RAM.

Software-wise, Motorola’s light touch on Android has been a constant favourite.

The new line of smartphones was represented by Lenovo after acquiring Motorola from Google in October 2014.

Here’s a breakdown of the specs in a handy chart (see below).

It’s hard to call out a victor for now, at least not until we’ve managed to review these devices. The tech giant has featured a 21MP primary camera capable of producing some neat results; this is accompanied by a 5MP front camera.
