Mourinho praises Man United ‘control’ in cup win

Three defeats in a row last week, two in the English Premier League against Manchester City and Watford, led Mourinho to dress down his players, with defender Luke Shaw coming in for particular criticism.

United now face Manchester City in the next round giving Mourinho the opportunity for revenge on Pep Guardiola.

Arsenal face Reading, a team they beat 7-5 in the League Cup fourth round in 2012, having been 4-0 down at one stage.

Jose Mourinho has hit back at his critics describing them as “Football Einstiens” after ending a hard week with Manchester United with a 3-1 victory over Northampton Town on Wednesday.

“I get the feeling Mourinho’s last tactical success was that Champions League game between Inter and Barcelona”, goal.com quoted the 44-year-old as saying.”He has won some titles since, but I think he has lost the plot”.

United, far from convincing in the victory with Michael Carrick scoring the first goal, then Daley Blind conceded a penalty with the home side levelling the score.

“So, hard match but overall a positive performance”.

Despite equal scrutiny from supporters, Mourinho said it was a different case with them and that he understood the fans’ feelings.

“I think I should stop speaking about referees’ decisions”.

“I don’t like to individualise too much”, Mourinho said when asked about Carrick.

“We deserved to win clearly”, said Mourinho “[It was as] hard as I was expecting, but we were totally in control for the first 35 minutes and then we were again in control for the last 45.

“I was there and made a goal and after that we didn’t give away any goals and, to the end, we were good”.

“Hopefully we can win and we can keep being high in the table”.

City enjoyed the best of the first half, but it took until four minutes into the second half for Gael Clichy to put them ahead with a deflected shot.
