Mourinho praises Manchester United’s “positive performance” after EFL Cup victory against Northampton

Sunday’s defeat at Watford and last Thursday’s Europa League loss to Feyenoord continued a poor run started after the worldwide break by losing the Manchester derby. “I swapped [Marouane] Fellaini with [Morgan] Schneiderlin and I think the performance was fine”. We want to be at the top of the table and we have to win. “In the second half, we didn’t stop until we scored”.

Mourinho felt the home side were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men following Jak McCourt’s two-footed challenge on Memphis Depay, but was happy with United’s overall control in proceedings.

The former Uruguay worldwide also won the FA Cup and Community Shield while at Manchester United from 2002 to 2004, but took more than a dozen games to score his first Premier League goal.

‘I can understand clearly the disappointment.

“We got the win last night, we’ve got three home games coming up before the global break and it’s important we try to win all three of them and get our season back on track”, said Rooney.

Ander Herrera has recorded footage of the Manchester United team bus, dropping a potential hint at Jose Mourinho’s line-up for their clash with Northampton. As I said before, it’s not just myself – the whole team is going in and working hard. “If the fans have been disappointed with the last week, I understand completely but I am sure they will be behind the team like they always are”, he explained, before taking aim at recent critics. I think the midfield worked really well and were in control of the game.

Guardiola’s City won 2-1 when he reprised his rivalry with Mourinho earlier this month and they will meet again at Old Trafford in late October when a place in the League Cup quarter-finals will be at stake.

“We have to get ready, forget about this and get ready for probably a tougher game on Saturday, to be honest with you”.

They could potentially come out of the tie with a cushy match against Reading, Bristol, Leeds or Preston North End. Even tonight, in midweek against a League One team, they were there for us, so we have no doubt.
