Chelsea won the Premier League and the League Cup last season, but have lost nine of their 16 league games so far and are 16th on the table, one point above the relegation place.

“Jose Mourinho is pleased that he returned to Chelsea football club because he was able to give the fans another Premier League title”, the statement said.

“He is very positive and is already looking forward”.

With (many of) the players possibly feeling the same way, Abramovich went to Chelsea’s training ground at Cobham today to deliver a speech to our first-team players and clear the air on his decision-making and the club’s future.

Following his exit from his first Blues spell he led Italian club Inter Milan to the treble of Champions League, Serie A and domestic cup in 2009-10.

“The same people need to remember that this is essentially the same group of players who won the league and league cup last season”.

Spanish midfielder CescFabregas, who has been criticised for his lacklustre performances of late after an impressive start to his Chelsea career, also posted a message of thanks to Mourinho on Twitter.

Chelsea have fired Jose Mourinho as manager and Guus Hiddink is likely to take up the role as interim manager until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes that there was no option left with the club but to sack the manager following their 1-2 defeat against top-placed Leicester City.

Chelsea decided on Thursday to release Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho from his duties, blaming him for the club’s dramatic collapse this season. “Chelsea are in a bad situation and there are reasons for that”, Hiddink, 69, said.

“I always think it’s quite a sad state of affairs when a team actually plays better when their manager has been sacked”.

“I want to gain as much information as possible”, Hiddink told De Telegraaf.

Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo says Jose Mourinho fell out with his players
