Mourinho takes blame for Man United’s derby defeat

“For me the next big game is against Feyenoord and the next game [Rashford] is going to play”, Mourinho said, coming close, but not that close to admitting he may have erred with his starting line-up in the 2-1 defeat by Manchester City.

“The next big game is against Feyenoord and he is going to play”, Mourinho said.

Ibrahimovic added that he will do all he can to support Rashford, insisting: “I’ll help him every day, him and all the others, in any way I can”. I know his future will be absolutely brilliant.

“Jose [Mourinho] said it was a mistake picking Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan”, Redknapp said in a column for the Daily Mail.

While the inclusion of Iheanacho was forced upon the Spaniard, due to Sergio Aguero’s suspension for violent conduct, the City manager still had Leroy Sane on the bench, and could call upon the German midfielder in the second half.

“Hopefully next time we play against United, people start to forget”. [Rashford can play as a] wide man or we play with both [him and Ibrahimovic up front], which we can do perfectly like we did against Hull City.

“The kid gave us what we had needed and normally we would be here now speaking about a different result”. I saw the game (again) yesterday we played against United to realise the things we made good and which things we have to improve.

With United trailing at the break, Jose Mourinho introduced Rashford to add some thrust to his attack, and a lively showing was nearly rewarded with an equaliser – Rashford beating Claudio Bravo with a low strike, but seeing his effort disallowed following a deflection off an offside Ibrahimovic.

His side was undone not just by the disappointing performances of its players but by some decisions that went against the home team during the game, according to Mourinho.

“As soon as you lose the ball it is hard, and especially with players like [Marcus] Rashford and [Anthony] Martial on the counterattack”.

But he saved his most trenchant remarks for centre-backs Daley Blind and, in particular, Eric Bailly, saying some players had shown signs they did not possess the requisite big-game temperament.
