“Zootopia”, the latest animation movie from Disney’s (DIS) stable, grossed more than $73.7 million domestically on its first weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.

The estimated $19.5 million Friday is the largest opening day gross ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios (topping Big Hero 6’s $15.8 million), and the estimated $31.8 million Saturday is the largest single-day gross ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios (topping Frozen’s $26.8 million second Friday).

“Zootopia” now sits at the fourth spot of the best March debuts for any feature film behind Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games” ($152.5 million) and Disney own live-action flicks “Alice in Wonderland” ($116.1 million) and “Oz The Great and Powerful” ($79.1 million). At the same time, not just honored films but the USA box office as a whole enjoy a measurable post-Oscars bump. The film debuted decently to $56,688 and a per-screen average of $14,172, so you can expect to see it expand over the new few weeks.

“Deadpool” continued its strong showing after almost a month in theaters, placing third at the box office.

The opening beat the record set by Frozen in November 2013, when the film opened to $67.4 million. Reigning champion, Deadpool, fell to No. 3 this week with another $16.4 million earned.

Of the weekend’s three big new releases, the only one to perform below expectations was Tina Fey’s wartime journalism dramedy ‘Whiskey Tango Foxtrot’.

Gerard Butler’s London Has Fallen did much better than his Gods of Egypt, opening to $21.7 million.

Analyst Eric Handler mentioned that box office revenue had grown 2.6 percent quarter-to-date, while adding that this is on track to at least meet the projection of 7 percent growth in the quarter. Combined with $362 million in global income, Fox’s gritty comic book movie now has a worldwide total of $673.2 million.
