Mozilla criticizes Microsoft over Windows 10 browser change

In a blog post accompanying the letter, the Mozilla CEO said it was “bewildering” that Microsoft made that choice, especially after the company’s antitrust troubles.

For comparison, Microsoft sold 40 million licenses for Windows 8, its last major operating system, in the first month of availability in 2012.

He said that, while it is still technically possible to preserve people’s previous settings and defaults, it now takes “more than twice the number of mouse clicks, scrolling through content and some technical sophistication” for people to reassert their choices.

Microsoft has also pointed out that many more upgrades are yet to come, as users all around the world eagerly await to upgrade to Windows 10. Click yes, and the Windows Settings app will open.

Mozilla’s Beard said that he reached out to Microsoft’s Windows team when it discovered that Edge was automatically set to the default browser, but that meeting “didn’t result in any meaningful progress”. Unfortunately the option is likely mainly used by more advanced users.

The company claims that the new Windows 10 operating system makes switching default applications tougher.

“The install process should ask the user whether they want to keep their default browser or use Edge instead”, Chaparro said.
