Mr. Robot: Episode One of Season Two

That assured commitment to tone, engaged with the news as both source of both melodrama and scorn, is unlike anything else now airing; it helps make Mr. Robot’s good moments great and its weaker moments at least novel. That is, women in business and tech aren’t shown on screen because they don’t work in business and tech off screen.

In the brief time it was available, fans who watched it on social media gave thumbs-up reviews of the new series.

But the biggest instance of this comes in the form of the titular Mr. Robot (Slater), the mysterious and eccentric leader of fsociety. The man unfavorably calls Gideon a “crisis actor”, as he has evidently been affected by the financial crisis that has resulted from the E Corp hack (which Gideon’s company formerly provided security for). The trailers suggest the economy is spiraling down after the E Corp hack that was supposed to relieve millions of their debts.

But anyway, instead of giving us those answers, Mr. Robot spent most of the two-part premiere checking in on its non-missing, non-B.D.

“My mom has no computer or Internet access to tempt me into the night”, Alderson says in his trademark, emotionless monotone. Plus, we can’t really place any trust in his words, can we? Angela has settled into her new job at Evil Corp and become a complete corporate nazi. It’s the type of things dreams are made up of, and maybe it actually is. The Seinfeld stuff feels like it’s trying to be a meta-commentary on TV, but I couldn’t suss out towards what end. In the beginning [of the show], she’s very attached to this idea of herself: ‘I want to be taken seriously. I learned because I realized yesterday that I know nothing about it. He knows who hacked them, the CEO claims.

– I didn’t talk about Sam Esmail’s direction, but wow.
