MS Dhoni first T20 batsman to score 5000 runs as captain

The veteran skipper was well supported by opener Rayudu, who slammed four boundaries and eight sixes as CSK took their points tally to 10, while RCB remained in the sixth spot with four points. He found an able ally in Quinton de Kock who made a brilliant 53 off 37 balls.

Earlier, Chennai won the toss and put Bangalore to bat on a flat track.

Chennai maintained their good record as they pulled off a thriller against Sunrisers in Hyderabad by just four runs.

De Kock had slammed a quickfire 37-ball 53, laced with four sixes and a boundary to show for as he and AB de Villiers had set the hosts a ideal platform to up the ante. The team Royal Challengers Bangalore is led by Virat Kohli and the team Chennai Super Kings is led by MS Dhoni.

MS Dhoni (captain), Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Faf du Plessis, Harbhajan Singh, Dwayne Bravo, Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu, Deepak Chahar, Kanishk Seth, Lungi Ngidi, Dhruv Shorey, Murali Vijay, Sam Billings, Kshitiz Sharma, Monu Kumar, Chaitanya Bishnoi, Imran Tahir, Karn Sharma, Shardul Thakur, N Jagadeesan, David Willey, Mark Wood, KM Asif.

Dhoni was adjudged Man of the Match for his splendid innings. The credit for finishing the game might go to Dhoni and his incredible range of shots, but Rayudu was the one who provided a flawless start, taking on the bowlers during the powerplay. Rayudu was unfortunate to be run out after a superb innings of 82 which took his within sight of victory before Dhoni – as ever – finished things off in style.

Batting first, Bangalore set an imposing total of 205/8 from their 20 overs, thanks to half centuries from South African duo Quinton de Kock (53), and AB de Villiers (68).

Despite scoring 15 runs in the previous over, CSK needed 30 in the last two overs.

Dhoni, who was calm as ever, said after the game, “I thought it was a hard chase when I saw AB batting to see them over 200, I thought it was 15-20 beyond par”.

Needing 16 off the last over, Dwayne Bravo (14 not out) hit Anderson for a four and six off the first two deliveries to ease out pressure.

A single to point then brought Chennai captain Dhoni on strike and he wasted no time in finishing the job, going across his stumps and smoking the ball for six over long-on in his trademark fashion.

But it wasn’t to be enough; Chennai now leap back to the top of the IPL 11 table with their fifth win in six – three of those have been stunning run-chases where they’ve required more than 50 runs from the final four overs in each.
