MS Dhoni: I wanted Virat Kohli to ease into captaincy

Gone are those days when Mahendra Singh Dhoni used to sport a long hairdo. Dhoni recently stepped down from the captaincy of ODI and T20 squad.

After this weekend’s first ODI, England and India will meet in Cuttack (January 19), Kolkata (January 22), Kanpur (January 26), Nagpur (January 29) and Bangalore (February 1).

That the current core group is young and has yet a lot of experience in high-pressure games will hold them in good stead, reckons Dhoni.

“When I started there were a lot of senior players in the side and as we progressed there was a time when the senior players had to leave and we had to make sure the transition is smooth”, he said.

“The top-order batsmen batted really well and I felt there was no explosive finisher at the lower order and due to that I was batting lower down the order”.

Was waiting for right time, was waiting for Virat to ease in into test format. “All of that I have to adapt to, but overall I don’t think much changes”.

“Dhoni is arrogant. The way Ravana’s proud came to an end, Dhoni will also suffer some day”.

Hope there will be no serious injuries to any player of the team.

When pressed about his hairstyle again, Mahi finally replied, “Baal toh bade nahi honge”.

Former Indian skipper, MS Dhoni, while explaining his decision to step down as India’s limited-overs captain, said split captaincy does not work in India. Now, I can’t be the Test captain as I have quit the Test cricket. The openers will also have to play a crucial role in the upcoming India vs England series as it will provide the middle order with the flawless platform to exploit the Indian bowlers in the death. “ODI is a slightly easier format than Tests for the captain”. While he might not be the marauder of old, there is still a fair few runs left in the left-hander and if Yuvraj can play a couple of big innings in this series against England, India will have a really good, experienced option to call upon during the Champions Trophy in the United Kingdom in June.

“It was something that was always in my mind”. Dhawan played in just one ODI series in 2016 against Australia at the start of past year and made 287 runs in 5 matches at an average of 57.40. “For the team there has to be only one leader… split captaincy doesn’t work in India”, Dhoni told journalists at a press conference in west India’s Pune city.

Pune: India skipper Virat Kohli on Wednesday said captaining in all three formats of cricket is quite “surreal” and he never thought that this day would come in his life. The other game the super cricket is very very interactive as I said it is a 4D game.

Dhoni succeeded Kumble as Test captain after the leg-spin legend announced his retirement midway into home series against Australia in 2008. Sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture. I knew my strengths and weaknesses but people did not like me as such. “It was always in mind when Kohli took over the Test captaincy”.
