MSI’s VR backpack was built for the HTC Vive
The MSI VR One is being touted as the world’s lightest and thinnest backpack PC system, weighing in at 3.6kg, or a little over seven pounds.

The VR One is a virtual reality gaming backpack which offers a mobile, untethered experience when used with headsets such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. Not entirely a surprise, as the company has already largely picked its horse in the VR headset race. Powered by overclocked CPU and GeForce GTX 10 series graphics card, MSI VR One is able to deliver full throttle virtual reality render performance under noise of 40dBA. Happily, the VR One weighs just under eight pounds.
Still, the VR One has to be reasonably potent to drive the Vive, and MSI says it’s capable of “over 90 FPS for any high-level VR devices”.
Port-wise, the VR One is fully optimized for the HTC VIVE with an HDMI port, Mini DisplayPort and a Thunderbolt3 by Type-C port.
Interestingly, the wearableish device is the product of a collaboration with HTC’s Vive team. The battery packs are also now integrated directly into the case and MSI has added hot swappable functionality making it easy to switch them out when users reach the end of their 1.5 hour play session.
The VR One is a complete PC, built into a rather impressive back-mounted chassis for effectively tetherless VR experiences.

The VR One comes with 2 hot-swappable batteries. The app links up with mobile phones, and from there, users can adjust fan and performance profiles, as well as monitor hardware status and battery levels. Today, MSI has announced it plans to officially unveil the VR One during this week’s Tokyo Game Show 2016. Assuming it hits that window, it will probably be the first VR backpack available for purchase.
