A man police say kidnapped an assisted-living facility employee in MI died during a police standoff Wednesday morning, WOOD-TV reported.
After learning the suspect was at Benton Harbor’s American Inn, police surrounded the hotel at about 10 a.m., 95.3 MNC reported. Meanwhile, two troopers who were involved in Wednesday’s shooting of Meridy are on leave while the incident is investigated by MI State Police out of Paw Paw.
Christensen said police made attempts to get the man to come out of a second-floor room at the motel, but they were not successful.
Police said the SWAT team heard gunshots in one of the hotel rooms and rushed in. The woman had what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.
A corporate spokesperson for The Willows said the facility was put on lockdown, but all of the residents were okay. An officer was hit by a shot fired by Meridy, but police say the bullet was lodged in the officer’s Kevlar vest and he was not injured.
