MSU to play MI twice in Big Ten basketball season

The Big Ten started releasing its conference schedule for 2016-17 on Monday morning, and the heated rivals will play once in East Lansing and Ann Arbor, after meeting just once this past season.

Home only: Rutgers, Nebraska, Michigan State, Illinois.

MI and Penn State could be two of the more improved teams in the Big Ten next year, so getting to play them in Iowa City should be a nice advantage.

While the opponents and sites have been announced for all conference games, the dates and times have still yet to be announced.

In the two years since joining the Big Ten, the Terrapins are 34-2 (.944) in conference play.

Last season, the Spartans played MI just once, an 89-73 road victory in Ann Arbor on February 6. Last year, IU finished 17-0 at home, 9-0 in league play and 6-3 on the road in winning its 22nd Big Ten title. IU coach Tom Crean’s team will not have to visit Michigan State, but will only get likely cellar dwellers Rutgers and Nebraska each once.

Maryland’s home-and-home schedule for next season includes Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State, Rutgers. The Hoosiers were unbeaten at Assembly Hall in 2016 as they won all 17 of their games. Last year, IU hosted Maryland and Ohio State and had a home and home series with Iowa and Minnesota.

IU will open the regular season November 11 against Kansas at Pearl Harbor in the Armed Forces Classic.

Michigan State and Michigan will meet twice during the upcoming basketball season.
