Mudslide Swamps Village In India; More Than 20 Feared Dead

Most of the villages have been cut-off due to landslides, making rescue and relief operations hard, government sources said.

Following heavy death toll in West Bengal and Manipur, President Pranab Mukherjee has condoled the loss of lives due to Cyclone “Komen” in West Bengal and floods in certain areas of Bihar, Gujarat, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

He said that initially locals from the neighbouring village made desperate bid to clear the huge earth masses enveloping the village but in vain and only after the arrival of the official rescue team, operation to clear the debris was started. “We have despatched the primary staff to the place of incident”, stated Shimray.

However, secretary of aid and catastrophe administration of Manipur, Jason A Shimray, stated with the help of NDRF, the teams have now began shifting to the affected areas.

The Manipur government has announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia each for the victims of landslide and flood following an emergency council of ministers meeting with state chief minister O Ibobi Singh in the chair today. Meanwhile, Director General of NDRF, OP Singh stated they’re constantly in contact with state authorities. The nearest helipad is in Ibol Jopi and from there our team is trekking four kilometers to reach the spot.

The rains and fast moving water have washed away around five bridges in Thoubal and Chandel districts.

She said the situation is more pronounced in the southern part of the state as about 33,000 people have been shifted to 700 relief camps.

Heavy rains triggered by massive mud/rock slides from the mountain area hit Jongmoul (Joumol) village under Chandel district.

The landslides have also caused major cracks along the Imphal-Moeh highway.
