Muguruza crowned at China Open

Top seed Garbine Muguruza will not get to the chance to build on her victory at the China Open on Sunday after withdrawing from the Hong Kong Open due to an ankle injury. “I think my body’s telling me to stop a little bit after all this three weeks of matches with not so many days to recover”, she added.

As Muguruza had failed to win a match in Beijing before, losing in the first round previous year to Ekaterina Makarova, she stands to continue rising up the rankings in cracking the top four next week. In addition to clinching her spot at the WTA Finals this week, Muguruza will rise to No. 4 in the world and sit just one point behind Maria Sharapova in the rankings. “I have great memories from Singapore previous year playing doubles and this time I am looking forward to compete against the best singles players in the world”. “Thank you for every day”.

Coming into this event, Bacsinszky had lost her last five matches since Wimbledon and looked likely to lose a sixth straight when she trailed Camila Giorgi 16 24.

The China Open is the second career title for Muguruza, who also won in Hobart previous year.

“I’m very excited to have qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore”, said Garbiñe Muguruza. She turned pro on 2 March 2012.

Muguruza has proved hugely popular in Bejing, just as she has wherever she plays-for her attacking brand of tennis but also for her serene bearing and her winning personality.

There was another quick exchange of service breaks early in the second set but when Muguruza won a 20-stroke rally to start the fourth game, points were soon flowing her way again. “It’s awesome, and I can’t wait to come back and defend my title next year”, Muguruza said.
