A visit to Israel is considered a rite of passage for USA presidential candidates as they seek to burnish their foreign policy credentials and appeal to Jewish American voters, and Netanyahu has hosted scores of candidates and elected American officials over the years.
His proposed ban came days after a deadly attack in San Bernardino, California by a radicalised Muslim couple.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is making it clear he doesn’t take kindly to any criticism – not from his rivals, nor from Saudi princes.
But Minnesota Democratic Congressman Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, says Trump is running a campaign of “hate and resentment” that disqualifies him from the presidency.
“I have chose to postpone my trip to Israel and to schedule my meeting with @Netanyahu at a later date after I become President of the US”, Trump said in a tweet.
But Netanyahu’s office said he “rejects” Trump’s remarks, stressing that the planned talks were in line with the premier’s practice of meeting candidates visiting Israel.
Trump, who is seeking the Republican nomination for the November 2016 presidential election, has been harshly criticized by world leaders and fellow Republicans for saying on Monday that Muslims, including would-be immigrants, students and tourists, should be blocked from entering the country.
Trump has said Dem frontrunner Clinton most fears running against him among the field of GOP nominees.
“I think for weeks you and everybody else were just bringing folks to hysterical laughter, but now he has gone way over the line”.
“The Muslim community in the USA – we are Americans!”

Ali, a former heavyweight champion who once gave Trump an award at a celebrity event, has defended Islam on a national stage for decades. The proposal has been widely condemned by Republicans, by the Obama administration, and by Netanyahu.
