Muhammad Ali’s hometown joins together in prayer and celebration
Most laughed at the idea of a 22-year-old Ali defeating the fearsome and hard-hitting Sonny Liston, but that’s what he did when the fighters met in 1964 – and then again a year later.

Lieberman said Ali had been supported by his family throughout his illness.
Before he was even heavyweight champion or had changed his name from Cassius Clay, Muhammad Ali was a force in the music world.
He said Ali came in one day and wrote a cheque so meals could be given daily.
Ali’s funeral will be held Friday in his hometown Louisville, Kentucky.
Former president Bill Clinton and comedian Billy Crystal are due to speak at Friday’s ceremonies. Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch will represent Mormons.
“Everything we’re doing here was blessed by Muhammad Ali and was requested”, Gunnell said.
But ultimately, it was septic shock that was the cause of death for Ali.
Generally referred to as one of the greatest boxing heavyweights of all time, Muhammad Ali was known for his highly unusual fighting style which involved dazzling speed, lightning-fast reflexes and constant movement around his opponents. Snippets of the band’s hit songs were interspersed with insults exchanged between lead singers Mike Love and Brian Wilson, cousins who would feud for real in subsequent years.
But Ali, too, was proud of Louisville.
Cars lined both sides of the Louisville street where Ali grew up. The guests piled flowers and boxing gloves around the marker designating it a historical site. “I’m now Muhammad Ali”, Ali told an NBC reporter.
Many people tweeted popular quotations attributed to Ali.
In their little pink house in Louisville’s west end, the brothers liked to wrestle and play cards and shoot hoops.
Ali’s body was returned to his grieving hometown for the final time. The Republican presidential candidate said he would temporarily ban all Muslims from entering the United States, a proposition Ali used one of his last public statements to rebuke.
“He hits awfully hard”, Brown told him. Instead, he ran along beside it, three miles all the way to school each morning.
He never forgot where he came from, she said.

“He’s done so much for Louisville”. His health had declined rapidly in recent years, and Porsche said Ali, who experienced severe tremors as a result of Parkinson’s disease, had been unable to sign his name for at least a year. “He’s truly a native son. Instead of remembering him for his amusing quip that he was “so mean” that he made “medicine sick”, I will remember him as a kind of enlightened pharmacist dispensing solace to all in need and, by his humble example, leading others to the source of that medicine”, he observed.
