Muhammad Wilkerson will report to Jets camp despite contract squabble

Todd Bowles might be glad there are no more two-a-days, and not just for the welfare of his players.

Chan Gailey’s offensive system is a flawless fit for Smith’s skill set, and the Jets have given Smith more talent to work with than he’s had in his first two years in the NFL, so this could be his best bet for success.

New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who has expressed public frustration with his contract, will report Wednesday for the start of training camp, a league source said Tuesday.

The storyline to end all Jets storylines revolves around the evolution of quarterback Geno Smith.

“I laugh at that”, Smith said.

“I just hope he’s healthy and he’s able to compete”, Bowles told the Daily News this week. “I think he’s doing better, but I can’t tell you what his timetable is”. Otherwise, well-traveled veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick could seize the job. The 31-year-old wide receiver likely has enough football left in him to play elsewhere if the Jets part ways with him after the season, but he claims that green-and-white will be his last colors.

NEW ERA: Owner Woody Johnson loved having Ryan as his coach, but felt it necessary to make sweeping changes. This is Bowles’ first chance as a full-time head coach – he went 2-1 as Miami’s interim coach in 2011 – but Johnson believes he has found the right combination to build a team that might someday compete for its first Super Bowl appearance since 1969. He highlights a Jets defensive line that is widely considered one of the NFL’s best and includes Sheldon Richardson, Damon Harrison and first-round pick Leonard Williams.

Revis nicknamed the defensive duo “Batman and Robin” – Revis is Batman – and returns after a bitter divorce in 2013 sent him to Tampa Bay. Revis, who won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots last season, wasn’t shy about talking about big things with the media this morning as he arrived to camp. Cromartie is back after playing one season in Bowles’ defense in Arizona. Unlike Idzik, who talked a good game about fostering competition but did little to actually create it, Maccagnan also bolstered the Jets’ depth at the position by signing free agent Buster Skrine.

“I didn’t make too much of it”, Bowles said.
