The explosions at the airport and a subsequent attack on one of the city’s metro stations left at least 30 dead, with hundreds more injured.
One person was heard shouting a phrase in Arabic moments before the explosions, Belgian media reported.
The Belgian federal prosecutor told state media that one of the explosions at the airport was “probably” a suicide attack.
ISLAMIC STATE has claimed responsibility for this morning’s terror attacks in Brussels that killed at least 34 and injured around 200 people. Belgian police had been on alert for any reprisal action.
Brussels’ public transport network, including all metro and train stations, have been closed and evacuated due to security fears. “The attack resulted in more than 230 dead and wounded”. NY and New Jersey airports have also increased security and Germany, France and the Netherlands have announced extra surveillance measures.
Three American missionaries were traveling through Brussels Airport when bombs went off, according to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The blasts came days after terrorism police raided an apartment in the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek, leading to the arrest Friday of Salah Abdeslam, a suspect in the Paris attacks on the run for four months, and two other suspects.
Two men were arrested at the Brussels North station, about mile away from the Maelbeek metro.
Passengers fled the airport’s departures hall after the first incident around 8 a.m. local time (3 a.m. ET).
“This is a day of tragedy, a black day”, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said.
