Howard County, Indiana, Sheriff Steve Rogers said 10 funnel clouds were confirmed throughout the city and county, but no deaths or serious injuries were reported from the damage.
The agency said Friday survey teams had confirmed weak EF0 tornadoes that caused little damage near the cities of Peru and Kokomo.
The National Weather Service says it’s still unclear how many tornadoes touched down in IN on Wednesday, according to The Associated Press.
Pence arrived in Kokomo by helicopter and is viewing storm damage in the area and in other parts of central in hit by the storms. The latest confirmations were of two weak tornadoes that caused little damage just outside Kokomo and the nearby city of Peru.
The twisters knocked out power lines reduced other homes to piles of rubble.
The Kokomo tornado was one of several that swept through central and northern IN and northwest OH on Wednesday. Kokomo is about 50 miles north of Indianapolis.
Another shelter is at Walnut Elementary School in New Ross, northwest of Indianapolis. Authorities say between 15 and 20 people suffered injuries but none were severe. But surveys were continuing and the storm tally was expected to rise, said Mike Ryan, a weather service meteorologist in Indianapolis.
At EF3, like the one in Kokomo, winds up to 165 miles per hour can be produced and have the capability of lifting cars off the ground and destroy stories of well-constructed homes.
Colts head coach Chuck Pagano began his press conference today by offering his condolences and thoughts and prayers with those affected by the tornadoes, saying that Jim Irsay and the rest of the Colts organization will do their part to help the people recover.
