Addressing a gathering after launching the first phase of the project covering south Mumbai – from Colaba to Worli – where 1,381 cameras have been installed, he said the CCTV network would boost crime prevention, early response, detection, prosecution and conviction.
“Inbuilt CCTV systems in malls, multiplexes, and housing townships in the city will be attached to Mumbai’s CCTV network”.
The entire project to install CCTVs at all the crucial places in the city is expected to cost around Rs9. This is aimed at bringing about a qualitative change in policing in Mumbai, Fadnavis said.
“Once the three projects are completed, it will enable 100 percent command and control with which a comprehensive strategy to tackle crime shall be evolved”, he said.
The plan is to have 6,000 cameras connected to Command and Control center and undertake its integration with technologies like Global Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), Automatic Number plate capture, CCTNS etc. This will act as a force multiplier for Mumbai Police which has seen several law and order challenges in the past.
The task involved days of research, checking the footages, trial runs, and comparing the spots, some separated by barely 10 mt. Bakshi said that Dhoble, along with the technicians, BMC officials, and police officers spent hours identifying the spots.
He said the efforts worldwide are to create Smart Cities, of which an integral component is that it should be safe. The data feed from the CCTVs would be sent to Mumbai Police headquarters and traffic police headquarters at Worli command centre. Verint’s SMC platform will help integrate various databases and deliver an integrated video surveillance project to Mumbai Police. The cameras installed include 1,150 point-tilt-zoom cameras, 20 thermal cameras and 4,850 fixed-box cameras.
