Mumbai travelers log on as Google starts train station Wi-Fi
RailTel Corporation of India, a public sector company under the Ministry of Railways, today announced the launch of free high-speed public wi-fi services in partnership with Google at the Mumbai Central railway station here. Let’s take a look at how one can connect to the free RailWire Wi-Fi network. Airports across India already have this facility where passengers can use free WiFi for up to 30 minutes before being charged.

“Affordable smartphones have made it possible for the common masses to experience the power of Internet”. In emerging markets such as India, it’s getting people online that is the bigger hurdle, and so it’s unsurprising that the Internet giant is happy to introduce free, high-speed internet to Mumbai’s Central Station in India.
In an emailed statement, Google said, “Even with just the first 100 stations online, this project will make Wi-Fi available to millions of Indians – who pass through railway stations every day, making it the largest public Wi-Fi project in India and among the largest in the world by number of potential users”.
“Best of all, the service will be free to start, with the long-term goal of making it self-sustainable to allow for expansion to more stations and other places, with RailTel and more partners, in the future”, he added in the same post.
“We’re delighted to launch India’s first high speed public Wi-Fi service in partnership with Indian Railways”. Indeed, while there are free public Wi-Fi projects in the train stations of cities such as Delhi, Kochi, Pune and Bengaluru, their scale remains small and Internet speeds slow.
Google’s current partnership with Indian Railways and RailTel was announced back in September and the next cities on the list are llahabad, Jaipur, Patna and Ranchi. Mumbai Central Railway Station alone supports 962 individual trains on a typical day, both for Mumbai’s local commuter rail as well as for longer-haul intercity trains.
1- Go to Wi-Fi Settings on your mobile and turn it on.
