Munich gunman planned shooting for a year

The teenage killer who went on a deadly shooting rampage in Munich had been planning the attack for more than a year and over that period spent two months in a clinic for psychiatric treatment, German authorities said.

German authorities said Sonboly had no links whatsoever to any Islamist groups.

The teenager had been planning the attack for a year, police say.

Investigators said the gunman had been bullied by schoolmates at least once four years ago, and had been fascinated by previous mass shootings.

A Munich Police statement, said: It is suspected the 16 year old is a possible accomplice.

The posting had been sent from a young woman’s account.

The shooting in Munich on Friday took place on the five-year anniversary of the Breivik massacre in Norway.

De Maiziere said that there has been no indication of any connection to global terrorism. Medication was found at the teen’s home, but investigators don’t know yet whether he had been taking it, Steinkraus-Koch added.

According to German police, the attack was probably politically motivated.

Police did not give any further details about the 16-year-old or how extensive his knowledge was of Sonboly’s plot.

Sixteen others were injured, of whom three are in critical condition.

Mr Andrae said Sonboly had a fascination with the neo-Nazi Anders Breivik, who murdered 77 people in a killing spree in Oslo.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will convene her security council on Saturday to address the shooting, according to AFP.

Thomas Steinkraus-Koch, spokesman for Munich prosecutor’s office, said there was still no evidence of any political motivation to the crime, nor that the shooter killed specific victims.

Heimberger said that Sonboly’s parents were still in shock from what happened and have not been able to be interviewed.

“His whole body language was of somebody who was very shy”.

About 2,300 police from across Germany and neighboring Austria were scrambled in response to the attack, which began at a McDonald’s across the street from the mall.

The gunman was among those found dead. He’d shot himself and had a backpack full of ammunition.

A video purporting to show the shooter, dressed in black, firing 20 shots has been posted on Twitter. In fact, while carrying out the attack, he shouted, “I am German!”.
