But despite the police warnings, thousands of people filled the streets of the German city to welcome in the New Year with fireworks and festivities.

On December 26, police in the Austrian capital Vienna said a “friendly” intelligence service had warned European capitals of the possibility of a shooting or bomb attack before New Year.
“We don’t know whether these names are right, whether these people exist, and where they are if they do”, Munich’s police president, Hubertus Andra, said.
Trains stations have reopened and police presence across the city has been reduced after police say there is no imminent terror threat.
Germany had received a tip from another country’s intelligence service that IS planned to attack Munich with up to seven suicide bombers, German officials said at a news conference on Friday.
He said that the police was still examining those hints of alleged suspects, and it was still not known whether there were so-called five to seven suspects from Syria and Iraq.
The authorities in Brussels called off all official events after three people were detained on Thursday in connection with an alleged New Year’s Eve plot.
Europe has been on high alert since the Paris attacks on 13 November and indeed France and Belgium scrapped their traditional fireworks displays over the heightened terrorist threats.
In a security update, Munich police also issued a statement saying that “following investigations, there is now no concrete risk of an attack” in the city. Friday noon, some 100 extra officers were still present in the city.
Meanwhile across Europe, public celebrations went ahead as planned but under the watchful eye of thousands of police and security forces. Police in the capital searched revelers who wanted to ring in the New Year at the Bradenburg Gate and prevented people with large bags from entering the area, according to DW.com.
