Muriel’s Wedding Stage Musical Will Feature ABBA Songs
It seems to be the time for classic films to be remade in musical form.

The musical will feature a score comprised of ABBA pop hits alongside original songs by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. It will be shown in Sydney’s Roslyn Packer Theatre in 2017.
Hitting the stage November 6 through December 30, 2017, “Muriel’s Wedding the Musical” will enjoy its first world-premiere run at the Roslyn Packer Theatre in Sydney, Australia, Global Creatures CEO Carmen Pavlovic announced on Thursday. Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen of the Desert) will direct, and Gabriela Tylesova will design the sets and costumes.
Muriel’s Wedding, meanwhile, joins a host of original Australian productions on the STC program including an Indigenous romantic comedy, Black is the New White, written by Nakkiah Lui and Talk written by Jonathan Biggins and starring John Waters as a shock jock radio presenter.
Like the original Australian film, Muriel’s Wedding The Musical centers on Muriel Heslop, the ABBA-loving romantic who dreams of the flawless wedding, despite never having gone on a date.
“I can’t imagine a better opportunity than partnering with Australia’s leading theatre company to ensure the best possible creative development and presentation of this brand new musical”, Pavlovic said in the announcement from Global Creatures. The shows notes imply that the musical will be set in modern times as it says that Muriel “ends up with everything she ever wanted – a man, a fortune and a million Twitter followers”.
