Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the embattled former Democratic National Committee chairwoman, faces a primary challenge from Tim Canova, who was supported by Sen.

Mark Griffin won the Republican primary in District 13 and will face Reggie Fullwood, who narrowly won his Democratic primary to defend his seat in the Legislature in November.

She had argued that McCain, who turned 80 on Monday, had grown too old and “weak” to serve another six-year term. “That’s a hard thing to achieve in a Congress that’s been as ineffective as this one has been over the last 10 years”. In early August, he moved Florida’s Senate race from the toss-up category to a race that leans in Rubio’s favor.

“Senator Rubio is trying to distract from his bad record”. Trump offended McCain and many other Republicans previous year by suggesting that the maverick senator and party’s 2008 presidential nominee was anything but a war hero because he was captured during the Vietnam War after his airplane was shot down during a bombing mission.

“Despite our differences, I hope we can both agree that voters deserve to know where we stand on the important issues of our time”, Rubio said in a day-after primary letter to Murphy.

The 2008 GOP presidential nominee easily defeated former state Sen. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are in a tight race within the margin of error, according to recent polls. Marco Rubio and Rep.

On the Democratic side, the battle between Grayson and Murphy looked like it would turn into a proxy fight between progressive and centrist Democrats.

President Barack Obama and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid backed him in the primary, and Vice President Joe Biden traveled to Florida three times to campaign with him. Murphy also managed to beat Pam Keith, whose late endorsement from the Miami Herald wasn’t enough to drive momentum. But they have tiptoed around him, mainly out of concern that his provocative comments on illegal immigration, Muslims and US support for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation could alienate moderate and independent voters in their states. While many candidates chose to drop out of the race once Rubio announced he was back in, Beruff made a decision to stay in, saying he’s “fed up with the status quo in Washington”. Like Ward, Beruff has embraced Trump and has accused Rubio of “tap dancing” around the presidential nominee and only offering him lukewarm support. “And Senator Marco Rubio wants to see Trump elected as our next president”. Murphy has repeatedly pointed out that Rubio called Trump a conman who can’t be trusted, but now supports him. One of the key reasons for his change of course, he said, was to help Republican retain the majority in the U.S. Senate to assure the GOP has greater influence in who will be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Elsewhere in the state, Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla., facing a 22-count federal corruption indictment as well as a redrawn district, became the fifth House incumbent to lose a primary this cycle. What’s more, the freshman senator only holds a modest lead over his rival and Democrats have been clear they will target the Sunshine State with heavy ad spending.
