They are making no secret that the impetus for their action is this year’s Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Two Democratic senators are pushing legislation to require presidential candidates to release their tax returns.
Sen. Chris MurphyChris MurphyDems push to require presidential nominees to release tax returns Dems doubtful of Sanders health push It’s time to act on mental health legislation MORE (Conn.) said that the American people have a right to learn about any foreign accounts and investments Trump may have, citing his controversial stance on Russian Federation.
Murphy said the push to get Trump to release his tax returns is urgent.
The renewed effort comes the same day that the presidential campaign of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton launched a new television ad blasting Trump for not releasing his tax returns.
“The worry here is that Trump’s positioning on Russian Federation – which is way out of the foreign policy mainstream – is a play to make himself and his family richer”, said Murphy, who is the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Wyden says tax returns could show a candidate’s overseas ties and charitable giving.
Trump has come under scrutiny for refusing to release his tax returns, something presidential candidates have a long histor yof doing.
Trump has not officially announced the proposal, and the campaign has indicated it will release more details in the coming weeks.
“Senator Murphy needs to use common sense and realize that Donald Trump and his private tax returns never caused a pay-to-play scheme and national security risk as Secretary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation did when they facilitated Russian Federation securing 20 percent control of America’s uranium, ” he said.
Trump himself has spoken positively about Russian President Vladimir Putin, and advocated closer relations with Russia.
Democrats are skeptical of this “immediate expensing” because of “the potential revenue loss-and are dubious that speeding up deductions for capital investment would have much benefit in an era when low interest rates mean deductions today and deductions in the future have similar value”, according to the Journal.
Trump so far has declined to disclose his return, saying it is under government audit.
“The legislation would direct the Treasury Department to release the returns so the Federal Election Commission can put it up on their website”, Wyden said.
“What we’re talking about is essential because we have a candidate who is flouting a 40-year tradition”, he said.
Ron Wyden, D-Ore., who introduced the Presidential Tax Transparency Act. “For almost 40 years presidential candidates from major political parties have respected this tradition and voluntarily released tax returns during the campaign”.
