Andy Murray is itching for a break after an exhausting few months, the world number two said, after defending champions Britain were knocked out by Argentina 3-2 in the Davis Cup semi-final.

Evans started well in winning the first set 6-4 before Mayer aggressive approach began to reap rewards.

He said: “Whether he’ll play next year is something I have thought about”.

In Glasgow Andy Murray and brother Jamie clinched the doubles rubber on Saturday to keep the reigning champions’ hopes alive after they went 2-0 down on a disastrous first day. On Friday: Richard Gasquet bt Marin Coric 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 6-1; Marin Cilic bt Lucas Pouille (Fra) 6-1, 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-2.

Gasquet, ranked 17, was drafted in after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils pulled out with knee injuries but proved unable to make inroads.

“I do not know what it is about the Davis Cup it brings out the best in me”.

Del Potro, still feeling his way back after a series of wrist injuries pushed him to the brink of retirement, had hinted yesterday night that he may not play Sunday after featuring in the doubles due to concerns for his health following a punishing summer schedule.

Cilic is 21-9 overall in singles and 7-6 in doubles. “Davis Cup is just two, three – in a great campaign, four – times a year”. In particular the reaction of Nathan Hines when that was put to one of rugby’s great warriors immediately after Scotland’s 2011 World Cup campaign ended, remains vivid in the memory. Very happy to finally get there.

“This weekend I accepted it better than what I have in the past”, he said.

“You do feel like you are the one who lost the match for those guys”.

It gives defending champions Great Britain hope of pulling off a repeat of their win over Russian Federation in Coventry in April 2013 when they also came back from 2-0 down to win the tie 3-2.

He said: ” It was an unbelievable match, a great atmosphere.

Born around 6,500 miles from this hard court in the city of Corrientes, and now ranked outside the world’s top 100, Mayer will always remember the weekend he spent in Glasgow. All morning, and then throughout Murray’s victory over Pella, there were competing rumours and whispers about whether Del Potro would play in a decisive fifth rubber.

Murray now trails Djokovic by 2,055 points in the race, although he has admitted his chances of surpassing the Serbian will be greater in the first few months of 2017.
