Murray defeats Raonic for his second Wimbledon title

This was the 11th Grand Slam title for Andy Murray and the third major final played by him this year. “You can’t forget what he has done in the last 18 months or so – it has been incredible”, Murray added.

In March, in his first event back following the birth of daughter Sophia, he won three matches in three days as GB began the defence of their title with victory over Japan in Birmingham.

“I don’t think I’d done that before in my career”.

“You know before, tennis was all I was bothered about, whereas now the first thing I think about when I get up in the morning isn’t tennis anymore and that’s a good thing”. “The last time it was just pure relief, and I didn’t really enjoy the moment as much, whereas I’m going to make sure I enjoy this one more than the others”.

It also illustrated the master-stroke he pulled off in tempting Ivan Lendl back into his coaching corner.

“It’s the most important tournament for me every year”. I’ve had some great moments here but also some tough losses the wins feels extra special because of the tough losses, ” Murray said.

Murray will now likely take some time off before returning in time for a warm-up event to prepare for the Rio Olympics, which start on August 6.

Murray has certainly cemented his position as clearly the second best player in the world and becoming world number one is a goal of his.

Murray helped Team GB clinch their first Davis Cup title since 1936 previous year, but they will now have to reach the semi-final without the British No. 1.

And according to his elder brother Jamie Murray who is getting ready to face Serbia in the Davis Cup quarterfinal, Andy deserves more than the three Grand Slams he has won.

Then, in the fifth game of the third set, Raonic had his first, and only, chance to break. Rafael Nadal remains fourth and Stan Wawrinka fifth, with Kei Nishikori holding on to sixth place just five points ahead of Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic.

That included the second-set tiebreaker, when Raonic missed an easy forehand volley on the first point and then failed to put away a smash to fall behind 4-1.

They split in 2014, after working together for Murray’s first two major titles.

The first chink Raonic’s armour came in the seventh game when he netted a forehand volley to hand Murray a break. “I had a couple of tries this year”, said Williams, who went back on court a few hours later to win the doubles title with older sister Venus.

Canada's Milos Raonic returns to Britain's Andy Murray during the men's singles final match on the last day of the 2016 Wimbledon Championships at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon southwest London
