The Scot fell to the court in tears after defeating Belgium’s David Goffin to clinch the team tennis title for Great Britain for the first time in nearly 80 years.

“This is the biggest promotion I think British tennis can get”.

“I can rest now, start training for Australia and give everything I’ve got there and then I know I get a break”.

“Andy is the most resilient person”.

“I hope (winning the Davis Cup) will be an inspiration”. But it’s obviously just a coincidence and yeah, it’s been an incredible journey the whole year.

“Hopefully we can all use it in a positive way to further our careers in the next few years”.

But for now, Murray will take some time and savor this victory. A win for Murray would guarantee Britain the Davis cup. In the crucial doubles, Andy and Jamie came from a set down to beat Tsonga and Nicolas Mahut, and Andy staged another comeback on the final day to beat Simon in four sets before collapsing into his chair in tears. “To see it five metres away in front of you, but you can’t have it is tough”.

It was the world number two, though, who landed the first blow, breaking the Goffin serve to love in the sixth game and that proved enough for him to take the set 6-3 in 48 minutes on his fourth set point. I’m really proud of what we did this year. I think that’s where the issue is a little bit.

“Andy was very solid today”, Goffin said.

After celebrating Britain’s first Davis Cup win since 1936, Murray called on the authorities to ensure the success does not go to waste. Nothing may ever top this now.

“As for celebrations, I don’t know. You don’t want to let it pass by without enjoying it”.

Andy Murray helped lead Great Britain to the Davis Cup title over Belgium after winning over David Goffin 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 to give the team an unbeatable lead.

One of the Murray brothers’ finest weekends.

“He supposedly made the dietary changes in the close season as well with the gluten-free diet”, Murray said of the world number one and fellow 28-year-old.

Smith said: “It is awesome, as good a feeling as I could imagine”.

ANDY MURRAY described his Davis Cup victory as the most emotional triumph of his career. If I do rest, it’s not like I’m going to lose all of the match fitness that I’ve built up over this year.

“I probably haven’t been as emotional as that after a match that I’ve won”, commented Murray, overwhelmed by the excitement.

“But ultimately I judge myself, and I’m sure people judge me, on the Grand Slams and how I perform in them, and this year unfortunately I didn’t manage to win one”.
