Now ranked world no. 46, Coric reached the semifinals in Dubai with that Murray win and also made the final four in Nice on clay in the summer, as well as quarterfinals in Estoril, Umag and Winston-Salem and the third round of the French Open with a nice win over Tommy Robredo.

British number two Aljaz Bedene earlier lost 6-3 7-6 (7-3) to American 13th seed John Isner. Isner scorched Bedene with 21 aces and won 49 of 57 points on serve.

Both players looked downcast as they came off the court and Suarez Navarro described it as a “sad” win, praising 24th-ranked Petkovic for not retiring from the match. Troicki was down 4-0 in the second and 3-1 in the third, before storming back in both sets to pull out an improbable win.
