Murray not keen on neutral Davis Cup final

Despite that, he is coming off a stunning couple of months having won the silver medal at the Rio Olympics and spearheading Argentina’s defeat of Andy Murray’s Great Britain in the Davis Cup.

He said: “Basically about three years ago I talked with my team about trying to set up an event in Scotland because there’s huge enthusiasm for tennis here”.

“A lot of the players have spoken about that, about potentially shortening the format, maybe playing it over Saturday and Sunday, best of three sets, I like that idea”.

Other proposals include reviewing the best-of-five-sets format now used in the Davis Cup.

“The Davis Cup ties in Glasgow have been attended incredibly well – the support we’ve had has been fantastic and that’s why we chose to come here to Glasgow”.

There was, on paper, a 75 per cent chance that Canada would host its first-round Davis Cup tie in 2017, set for February 3-5, 2017 immediately after the Australian Open. If it doesn’t work you can always change back as well.

For while all the top players have, in recent years, seen adding the Davis Cup title to their list of career achievements as an essential accomplishment, personally and for their nations, the physical demands of fitting the four required weeks into a notoriously packed tennis calendar have, for most, proved too much to sustain year after year.

“With a neutral venue, I am not sold on that yet, I do love the home and away atmosphere that we get”.

Other proposals include doubling the Fed Cup World Group to 16 teams to match the men’s event.

Brother Jamie Murray, former British number one Tim Henman and top player Grigor Dimitrov are also taking part in a series of singles and doubles matches, with all proceeds going to Unicef and local Glasgow charity Young People’s Futures. It is a little bit sore but I am okay.

“Tonight is the same thing, we want to have a great time and play some fun, entertaining tennis”.
