Serena Williams reacts after a point against Yaroslava Shvedova, of Kazakhstan, during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, in NY.

SERENA, PLISKOVA REACH SEMIS: Serena Williams’ serve was broken for the first time at this year’s U.S. Open.

The 24-year-old Romanian fought off 12 break points and converted her fifth set point of an epic 10th game to draw level.

She finished with 18 aces, a 50-20 edge in total winners and won the point on 26 of her 32 trips to the net.

In the men’s singles, Nishikori held his nerve in a gripping final set to move two wins away from becoming the first Asian man to capture a Grand Slam singles title.

Murray was furious, claiming that Cicak had said earlier that they would play through any noise distractions, and after losing the game the Scot made his point to one of the supervisors.

His win came just three weeks after losing to Murray in the Olympic semi-finals. It makes me more motivated. And it’s his second semifinal at the Slam of the season after the French Open. I think my tennis is starting to respond as I want but physically I’m still down. But then again, Murray became a father for the first time after reaching the final of the Australian Open this year. At 5-all, 30-all, Murray double-faulted to set up break point, and Nishikori converted by reaching for a stretch volley victor. Wawrinka also almost exited the Open in the third round, saving one match point in the fourth set before rallying to beat Britain’s Daniel Evans 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (8), 6-2 in four hours and two minutes last Saturday. He came into the US Open with an ailing wrist, which he suffered during a first-round loss at the Rio Olympics.

“It is important to appreciate that an alert on its own is not evidence of match-fixing”, said the spokesman.

The TIU insisted that the setting up of an investigation does not automatically indicate corruption.

At 3-all in the second set of Murray vs. Nishikori, rain interrupted play for the second time in the match. Chair umpire Marija Cicak ordered the point to be replayed, which irked Murray, who subsequently discussed the matter with tournament referee Wayne McKewen.

Then, with Murray on the verge of a break for a 3-1 lead in the fourth set, the stadium’s sound system burst briefly into life.

Nishikori was the 2014 runner-up at Flushing Meadows.

Kei Nishikori has amazed the whole world when he defeated the Wimbledon and Olympics victor and 2012 US Open champion, Andy Murray in US Open championship.

The noise occurred with Murray already up two sets to one and holding a second break point at 1-all in the fourth.

At the start of the third set, Halep held two break points at 15-40, but Williams came through to lead 1-0.

Nishikori won the second set 6-4 with some brilliant backhands and a cool, calm demeanour that has stood him in good stead in his career and did so particularly in this match. She kept going for shots, and she did what she needed to do. I was missing too much.

Wawrinka, the third seed in the tournament was down 1-4 in the first set against crowd favourite Del Potro.

The other women’s quarterfinal pits two women who’ve never been this far before at a Grand Slam tournament: 10th-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic and 92nd-ranked Ana Konjuh of Croatia.

He next will face the victor of Wednesday night’s last quarterfinal between 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro and No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka. Forecasts call for partly cloudy skies, blustery winds and a chance of afternoon showers.
