“The US Open is obviously a special place”.

Williams has played only three matches since winning a record-tying 22nd Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon in July, and is struggling with a sore shoulder.

And there are times when the 34-year-old American basically forgets that she transcends her sport and has become a cultural icon away from the tennis court. Had Puig remained unseeded, she could have met one of the top players in the first or second round.

“I have not played a lot, I haven’t practiced a lot, but I’m just now starting to feel a little better”, the world number one told reporters after the draw for the year’s last grand slam tournament, which starts on Monday.

If the past 12 months are anything to go by, we could be in for another surprise in NY.

The German fell in the final to Karolina Pliskova, allowing Williams to hold the top spot through the Open and extend her streak to 186 weeks at number one, equalling Graf for the longest continuous reign.First up for Williams in NY will be Russian lefthander Ekaterina Makarova, who has lost four of five matches to the American but beat her at the 2012 Australian Open.

It was a win which came after a dispiriting run at the Slams – a shock semifinal defeat to Roberta Vinci in NY 12 months ago followed by losses in the Australian and French Open finals to Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza respectively. One of them is her fitness as Williams has been sidelined since the Olympics due to a right shoulder injury that led to her pulling out of the Western & Southern.

Stephens out. American Sloane Stephens has withdrawn from the U.S. Open because of a right foot injury.

As the US Open 2016 gets near, world no. 1 Serena Williams continuously faces issues regarding her possible downfall.

Venus Williams landed the sixth seed. The two-time US Open champ – a quarterfinalist previous year – faces Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova first up.

Doing an interview shortly after the draw was set, Djokovic joked he wasn’t “mentally ready” to see his bracket quite yet and wanted to wait until “I’m alone”.

Although she has always had vast talent, Keys believes she has finally found the right mindset to be a contender for a grand slam title.

Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber of Germany drew the second seed and will face Slovakia’s Polona Hercog in her first match.

“I think it’s okay, I’m okay with it”, Williams said.

“Again, I am in a position, like everybody else, like all of you, we all have private issues and things that are more challenges than issues, more things that we have to encounter and overcome in order to evolve as a human being”, he said of the issue, without going into detail. “And now, instead of three games, it’s maybe two points”.

At the age of nine, the Rock Island, Illinois native moved to Florida with her family to train at the academy run by 18-time grand slam victor Chris Evert and her brother John, who became her coach. By 2013, she made the top 50.

The shoulder was bothering her, and it was at Wimbledon as well. After brief spells with former US tennis pro Jesse Levine and former top-ranked Mats Wilander at the start of 2016, Keys started working with Hogstedt in April.

The changes have paid off. But other slated candidates could also be her threat as well. In addition to that, French Open victor Garbine Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska are also predicted to pull Williams out from the court during the semi-finals. The Russian is coming off an Olympic doubles gold medal.

Stephens hadn’t played since losing in the first round at the Olympics.

Chris Evert has been so impressed with Keys’ progress that she tipped her as one of the main challengers for Williams alongside more established names such as second-ranked Kerber, third-ranked Muguruza and No. 5 Halep, a semifinalist in NY a year ago. Who you are? What you continue to do, not only in tennis, (but also) off the court? Vinci is seventh and American Madison Keys is seeded eighth.

Serena is chasing record seventh US Open and modern era all-time high of 23 Grand Slams in New York
