Murray splits with coach Mauresmo

Murray played well in Melbourne, reaching the final of the Australian Open again, and felt the benefit of a consistent period of work with his coach.

“I’ve learned a lot from Amelie over the last two years, bot on and off the court” he said in a statement. It was the same for me when she also stuck by me, as did all those members of my team who are still with me now.

The Scottish Daily Mail says it is “break point” for Andy Murray’s relationship with Amelie Mauresmo and claims his former coach’s search for the correct work-life balance was behind the split of their “groundbreaking” arrangement. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the great team of people he has around him”. For both of us I think if you have two and a half months and you only spend ten days together – and in those ten days I was going through a tough patch in Indian Wells and Miami – it makes things hard because you need to work your way through those tough times together. “To win as many titles as he did in his career, it’s quite fantastic”.

The pair announced they had ended their ground-breaking partnership ahead of the Rome Masters, after nearly two years working together. For the record, Becker is the youngest ever champion in this tournament, when he lifted the title at 17, the same year as his breakthrough win at Wimbledon in 1985.

“Ten years [later] we are the two best players in the world, which at that time maybe it seemed like something that will be very challenging for us to achieve, but we both thrived to be at the top and we’ve known each other since we were 12”.

Murray, 28, said he had “learnt a lot” from Mauresmo but they had “mutually agreed” to end their partnership. But, the successes included his greatest victories to date, his 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon titles. Murray felt the need to dismiss rumors of a fallout with Mauresmo in March after a three-set loss to Grigor Dimitrov at the Miami Open sparked speculation all may not be well between them.

Djokovic is the only player to win six Masters in a year, and this year he already has won three out of the four Masters so far.

Murray arrived in Rome after losing the Madrid final to defending champion against Novak Djokovic. I don’t think Andy Murray needs a top coach these days. He doesn’t have much time to recover before the French Open, which begins in two weeks.

I have to get used to it.

Still, Murray, who finished as the runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Masters on Sunday, won’t be on his own in Paris as he will be accompanied by his assistant coach Jamie Delgado.

“It doesn’t have to be, but it’s definitely possible it could be an ex-player”, the Briton told BBC Sport.

There was no escaping the impression that the Mauresmo reign was considerably more relaxed than was his time with Lendl, whose stern countenance and raw, devilish-sense-of-humour approach Murray came to appreciate for the discipline and focus it brought to his game.
