Police in Belgium’s capital have detained two suspects in connection with the attacks while a Belgian national living in Syria has been identified as the possible mastermind.

Andy Murray kicked off his ATP World Tour Finals campaign with a straight-sets victory over Spain’s David Ferrer.

“I think everybody right now is concerned about things”, the 28-year-old told reporters. I would have signed up to be in this situation at the end of the year in comparison to last year and hopefully I can play a few good tennis here and in Davis Cup. That’s all we can do. There was nothing to suggest otherwise a day later, and both Murray and Ferrer sought to shorten points by coming to the net.

He played a terrible service game to get broken immediately at the start of the second set but won a gruelling rally to level at 3-3. “But I got it back pretty quickly, which was pleasing”.

Although he is bidding to win the year-end championships for the first time – he has not yet reached the final – Murray is preoccupied by what comes after the tournament, the Davis Cup final. Perry was also the last British man to win the men’s title at Wimbledon that same year, until Murray came along.

In the late match at the ATP finals, nine-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal beat current French Open champion Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 6-2.

Wawrinka faces Nadal in what is sure to be a fascinating contest.

Murray and Peers, who could finish the year as world number one before going their separate ways, missed the chance to clinch the opening set in the 10th game as Bolelli produced a timely passing shot, but the twice grand slam runners-up were not to be denied for long.

“I’m very happy to start like this, that’s important for my confidence”.

Nadal, 29, has lost a career-worst 19 matches this season and at one stage he slumped to 10th in the world – his lowest position since 2005. I feel good just now.
