Roads have been closed in the suburban neighbourhood surrounding the mosque and Transport for London said the A24 into Morden town centre, is shut both ways, northbound and southbound.
“We are now continuing to work closely with the local community to ensure our damage control operations take full regard of the religious significance of the building’s contents”.
Some were already speculated it may have been started on objective.
Morden councillor Imran Uddin has said it is believed to be an accident.
However, the mosque said at this stage it was waiting on the fire report to find out more.
Merton Council leader Stephen Alambritis said one person had been taken to hospital for a smoke related injury.
The police said there was no information about people inside the building, and couldn’t give any information about the damage of the “large fire” at present.
The dome stands 23m above ground level.
The enormous building sits on a 5.2acre site and can hold 10,500 people.
Muslims and non-Muslims have already expressed their dismay at the damage likely to be left behind by the fire.
People tweeted images from the scene as the fire burned. Thanks to @LondonFire for their quick response.
Crews from New Malden, Wandsworth, Tooting, Sutton, Mitcham and Norbury fire stations attended the incident. “Hoping everyone there is ok”.
According to BBC, “the brigade was called at just after 12:00 GMT+1 to the mosque, which also has a community center attached”.
