Maurya claimed the “exodus” in Kairana was a result of “high-handedness of a particular section of society” as well as an issue concerning law and order.

On Wednesday, a fact-finding BJP team visited Kairana to review the situation over alleged migration of Hindus. The leader released a list of 346 families that had deserted the city since 2014 leaving their properties behind after they were allegedly targeted and persecuted by another community. However, state CM Akhilesh Yadav had accused BJP leaders of being “dishonest” and lying.

While observing that the allegations made were serious in nature, the NHRC also directed the state’s DIG (Investigation) to depute a team of officers for a spot enquiry in the matter covering all the allegations made in the complaint and submit a report within two weeks.

Satyapal Singh, former Mumbai Police commissioner and MP from Baghpat, said the people of Kairana were terribly scared and “it appeared that criminals controlled the administration here”.

Congress’s in-charge of UP Ghulam Nabi Azad said the BJP leadership stood “totally exposed” on how they wanted to exploit the situation and tell the people that the alleged migration is on religious lines while it was for economic reasons.

“Some even didn’t give me their phone numbers, because they feared for their lives due to threats”, Satyapal Singh said in his claims.

The BJP, on Monday, the concluding day of its crucial national executive at Allahabad, raised the bogey of “Hindu exodus from Kairana” saying, “UP should not take Kairana lightly, it is a shocking event”. “The government should come out open on the details of Kairana incident”, Maurya alleged.

“The BJP doesn’t have any issue to raise”. However, a state inquiry team has found that only 9 people of the 346 listed had left because of harassment.
