The victory for Newton, the first Panther to win the award, was announced Saturday night during NFL Honors.
Newton, 26, was a near unanimous choice for the NFL’s most prestigious honour, garnering 48 of the 50 votes. Charles Barkley was named the NBA’s MVP for the 1992-93 season, Frank Thomas was the American League MVP in baseball in 1993 and 1994, and Josh Donaldson was named the AL MVP last season.
Apparel giant Under Armour commissioned a commemorative set of 50 gold cleats with Newton’s signature on them, which sold out within a couple of hours despite being shopped for US$500 (NZ$750). In comparison, fellow QBs Tom Brady and Carson Palmer each got one vote. It’s about a player making the team around him better and that’s exactly what Newton did on the season. He finished the season third in league rushing and scored 10 touchdowns.
Newton holds 45 total touchdowns with 3,837 passing yards and 636 rushing yards. He also won it in 2012 and a year ago.
At Forbes, Eric Macramalla argues some fans find Newton arrogant, and that it’s his personality that drives criticism.
“They played better than us, made more plays than us, and that’s what it came down to”, said the fifth-year quarterback. You always think as a player – I know we did – like we’re going to get back to another one. “So many thanks go out to so many people, from Pop Warner to the Panthers”.

Cam Newton keeps his personal life pretty private, but he did reveal in late December that girlfriend Kia Proctor had a child.
